What about removing the ceiling and creating a double height living room? What's more is that the entire world is quickly falling in love with this ingenious trend. This technique will do more than make your living room utterly remarkable, it will also add depth and dimension to the rest of the house.

As green is a trend that's also here to stay, the marble feature wall above is particularly on-point. 'The great thing about natural surfaces is that each one is unique and gives people the opportunity to do something different and ultimately have fun,' says Oliver Webb, Director at luxury stone suppliers Cullifords. Luxury living room ideas allow you to create a space for relaxing that also feels refined and design-driven. This luxury living room design idea enables you to pay homage to the past, bringing new life to your space. Mix in the new and old in your most unique way because these designs usually boast a patina that can’t be easily recreated. If you’re having trouble finding the perfect furniture for your luxury home, consider investing in custom furniture.

Refined Recessed Ceiling Coves

These services let you enter your room dimensions and place your furniture virtually. This gives you a visual of how the room will look before you actually arrange the furniture in your room. You could use one as the casual family area, and the other could be the formal entertaining space for guests. Or, if you don’t have children, then your main living room could be the luxurious formal living room.

Rethink the Lighting

Since your living room is large, consider a sectional that will look good, be functional, and comfortable. A modern look can be a mixture of different aspects but it is usually characterized by clean lines, modern lighting, plenty of natural light, and modern furniture. The confusion can come from styles such a mid century modern where they used classic pieces are used such as accent furniture. Even though some styles take traditional elements, they manage to keep it modern in other ways such as with a minimalist look.

Stylish Sectional Seating

Typically, even the most minimal of flat screens are a waste of real estate design when they are off. Also, as practical as it may seem from an interior design perspective, all the cables are wiring jutting out can be an eyesore. The materials used in your furniture can greatly affect its quality and durability. Look for pieces made with high-grade materials, such as leather, wool, or silk, as these materials are more durable and can withstand wear and tear better than lower-quality materials. When shopping for furniture, it’s important to look for pieces that are well-made and constructed with attention to detail.

Curved furniture adds softness to living spaces and is a trend that's picked up pace as we all look to our homes to become a cocooning sanctuary. 'Statement bookmatched feature walls will add a dramatic and luxurious statement to any room in the home but particularly in a living room setting,' he adds. An expansive area rug gives a living room a sense of space and drama while also working to 'zone' your sofas and coffee table in a stylish manner. Not only is art a wonderful way to add a jolt of color to your living room, it also creates an extra level of gravitas in the space.

If you choose a large sectional sofa, it can wrap around in a U- or L-shape to provide plenty of seating. Place several throw pillows throughout for extra comfort and cushioning. Maybe you have a vintage pinball machine that you could set up in the corner. Or perhaps you have a family heirloom chaise lounge that you could reupholster.

Clearing up the space above will open up the entire room as well as open up your mind to all the endless possibilities. In the entry, luxury is in the quieter details, like the leather-upholstered closet doors designed by Lauren Warnock and fabricated by C Sanchez Upholstery and Creative Millwork. Warnock also designed the marble-and-metal console, crafted by Sprovieri’s Custom Counters and Migala Metal Designs LLC. A touch of blue in your living room design can add a sophisticated and serene atmosphere. For a minimalist approach, use sleek and sophisticated furniture and keep the color palette neutral. Use metallic accents, such as gold or unlacquered brass, to add a touch of glamor.

How to start a flower bed Turn a blank space into a floral paradise

how to design a flower bed

This can be best accomplished if you start early by paying careful attention to other gardens you admire in your neighborhood. A trip to a local arboretum or public garden can also give you ideas. And garden magazines may include planting diagrams aimed at achieving a particular look for a finished garden bed. When I moved to my new house my Dad (he's a farmer) came over and plowed a space for a vegetable garden.

How to Design a Flowerbed Using the Garden Planner

"Spring and summer are the main events for many flowering plants, so there will always be a lot of choice for these periods," says Thompson. Once you know where your garden will go, you can decide how you want it to look. The shape and size possibilities are endless and should be tailored to the recommended spacing for the plants you want to include. A flower bed gives you a place to plant colorful annuals, perennials, and shrubs that can fill your yard with beauty. Add a couple inches of compost around existing plants, work this into the top layer of soil a bit, if possible, but do not dig deep enough to harm the roots. Do not allow the compost to come into contact with the stems of the plants as this can promote disease.

Building Raised Beds

In the center is a butterfly wing shaped bed taken at the Michigan State Children's Garden. The photo on the right shows a series of small island beds that use mailboxes as their anchor. While using herbicides can effectively kill grass, it may not be suitable for planting until much later, as most of these are not environmentally friendly.

Starting a flower bed can transform your garden area, providing a splash of color and the satisfaction of nurturing plants. I’ve found it’s essential to consider the location’s sunlight exposure, the type of flowers I want to grow, and the garden design. I often sketch my plans to visualize the flower bed before digging, ensuring I’m making the most of the available space. First, consider the shape of the bed and what will look best in your yard. Then, choose plants that will thrive in your climate and soil type.Be sure to add a variety of colors, textures, and heights to create an interesting design. With a little planning, you can have a beautiful flower bed that will add curb appeal to your home.

A layer of organic mulch helps maintain moisture, suppress weeds, and breakdown naturally to enrich the soil. I avoid using herbicides and instead opt for environmentally friendly options like hand weeding or organic pre-emergent solutions that won’t harm the ecosystem. When I’m ready to plant, I use a shovel for digging to ensure that I loosen the soil to a depth of at least 12 inches. I then incorporate 2-3 inches of compost to enhance soil fertility. For planting seeds or seedlings, I make sure to space them appropriately, considering their mature size for optimal growth and moisture retention. If you remove the grass using a trench shovel or machine, you may need to till the soil to break up any remaining roots.

Click on various flowers you think you may want to grow, placing them in your new garden in no particular order. If you are not sure what a plant looks like in real life, click the “i” symbol to the left of the flower icon in the plant selector to learn more about it. Give birds a place to preen by setting up a bird bath in your flower bed. Not only do these structures increase your garden's wildlife population, but they also provide a soothing water feature that will make the space feel serene.

This post gives you everything you need to know about designing and building a fantastic flowerbed for your yard. After deciding where you want to place your plants, remove them from the pot they came in and gently tease the circling roots. Dig a hole the same height as the previous plant pot, place them in the ground, and cover with soil.

Natural fertilizers often release nutrients slowly and therefore last a long time. This slow-release characteristic can also translate to lower levels of environmental pollution as the nutrients leach into groundwater and surface water bodies. This process will help the patch that you’ve chosen to be better able to support the flowers that you want to grow. There are all sorts of amendments you can add to your soil to improve its quality, but there are a few that are especially indispensable.

Loosen the soil with a garden fork or tiller, allowing for better drainage and root growth. Consider adding organic matter, like compost or well-rotted manure, to improve soil fertility. It's important to provide a nourishing environment for your flowers to thrive. A vibrant and blooming flower bed can transform your garden into a picturesque oasis by bordering lawsn or adding colour to patios. Designing and planting your own flower beds is a fulfilling and creative endeavour for DIY gardeners. My plant choices are deliberate, aiming to create a color-coordinated spectacle throughout the seasons.

Flowers that don't need a lot of water helps reduce time and effort spent watering. If you want to build on top of concrete or another hard surface, you'll need a protective bottom layer of permeable landscape fabric. This will help keep soil from leaking out the bottom of the raised bed yet allow water to drain.

Floor Plan Creator Software Powerful Floor Plan and Design App

floor lamp design

It would be nice if you could also adjust the height of the lamp, but for this price, it’s hardly a dealbreaker. A standout at this year's High Point Furniture Market, this modern masterpiece from Visual Comfort makes a powerful statement. It has just the right amount of masculine edge that will bring a little drama to any space. Coming in with built-in three-way dimming, this floor lamp is perfect in a study, game room, or bar area.

Apartment Plans

Curved, architectural silhouettes fit seamlessly in contemporary or modernized traditional interiors. The subtle glow creates a peaceful, soothing atmosphere perfect for living rooms. In this article, we will share 17 of our favorite floor lamp ideas for living rooms. It’s available in two color accents, either brushed nickel or brass, giving you the opportunity to have it blend with your existing home decor. The foot switch can be convenient, but you’ll need to keep it in an easy-to-reach location to take advantage of it.

The 15 Best Floor Lamps for Every Space, According to Design Experts

Again, limited and infrequent availability—it is no longer shipping at time of writing—as well as its more specifically themed style, prevents us from recommending this as a top pick. Its wide-legged stance and large-diameter shade make this lamp best suited for larger rooms, where its all-black presence won’t dominate the space. In contrast to its size, the Treo is rated for only a modest 40-watt maximum output. One other arc lamp we tried, the LumiSource Salon Floor Lamp, had an inadequately proportioned all-metal base that always filled us with worries about tipping over. When in doubt, at this scale always go with the floor lamp with the heavier foundation and superior, thicker-gauged arm.

Integration With Other Software

It would look particularly stunning positioned next to a well-stocked bar cart. A modern twist on midcentury silhouettes, this stunner from Mitzi mixes in well in both traditional and contemporary interiors. With its white linen, shell-shaped shades, it delivers focused light exactly where it's needed, whether that's brightening up a game table or creating ambiance in a den. Later on, such a great feature as 3D walkthroughs can be helpful for showing the best bits of any project that is also interactive.

That's why designers say investing in the right floor lamp should be top of mind as well. The large surface area of drum shades allows them to efficiently spread light from floor lamps around a living space without harsh shadows. The Mercury Row Breesha Task Floor Lamp is an understated and refined task lamp that provides a purposefully direct light ideal for working, reading, and doing puzzles and crafts.

RoomSketcher Floor Plan Examples

That was bad enough, but we especially didn’t care for the lamp’s bouncy-elastic metal arm, prone to shake and shimmy like an angler’s fishing rod at the lightest touch. Then we bounced a regulation-size basketball repeatedly at each one, aiming for the center from approximately 4 feet away. To see whether any would fall over, we also rolled the basketball toward the foot of each lamp from 8 feet away. None of them fell, but some shook enough to visibly and audibly reveal where loose fittings could potentially lead to problems in time. Except for models that shipped with their own included light bulbs, we used , the Cree 60 W Equivalent A19 Dimmable Exceptional Light Quality LED Light Bulb, for testing.

Or make reading a delight with some reading lamps behind your favorite armchair or sofa. We are planning to test more rod lamps for a future update, since our current pick, the Adesso Felix LED Wall Washer, has been experiencing stock issues. It’s well made and stable, and it does the work of many lights for a modest price. But its modest 40-watt output per lampshade ranks at the lower end of all the lamps we tested, and its mid-century–adjacent design looks and feels a little cheap in comparison to our top pick. Continuing with this analogy, a floor lamp can practically be a band unto itself. Partnered with the right bulb and an add-on dimmer to adjust output, some models can operate as accent, ambient, and task lighting all in one.

This can be helpful with new buildings, and it’s also beneficial for design-build contractors working on-site for planning and estimating additions. Also, despite a floor plan software’s in-depth design features, most large-scale plans will still need the approval of an engineer before a building department accepts the plans and approves permits. Floor plan layout software can be a great tool for getting ideas into a workable model, but users will want to be aware that it may not be the only program or tool they need before they can start building. We know how important it is to find the best floor plan software for a specific set of needs. We considered designing and building projects to collect what we found to be the most important features for customers to look for, which gave us a start on finding the top products.

This simple alteration gives the Trio a taller, minimalist silhouette, which aesthetically mirrors the trio of shades in shape and makes it altogether more elegant and cohesive as a decor object. Sleek and tall, this three-light tree lamp doesn’t require a lot of space but adds both ambient and task illumination, and its brushed brass offers a little glimmer of glamour. It looks similar to lamps that cost 10 times as much, and the tulip-style base should appeal to fans of mid-century design. We know style is subjective, but we think our picks—for task, console, tripod, tree, arc, and rod lamp—will complement a wide variety of interior spaces. The artisanal beauty and refinement of ceramic elevates lamps to statement decor pieces for the living space. The size of the drum shade can be adjusted, with larger shades distributing more ambient light and smaller for more task-specific lamps.

The majority of floor lamps are light enough to pick up and move with just one arm. But arc lamps and some larger tripod models can be heavy and unwieldy once assembled. Remember to check the base and total weight before purchasing to avoid being stuck with something heavier than you can comfortably and safely lift.

Today\'s floor lamps reflect a confluence of technology, art, and design, making them vital in creating ambient and focused lighting. Imagine how the floor lamp will look standing among existing furniture, wall colors, and other decorative features. If you’re looking for a statement piece, keep in mind that you’ll often pay more for something that stands out from the crowd in size or style. We focused our search on six styles—task, console, tripod, tree, arc, and rod lamps—that would fit a range of lighting needs. Before purchasing, always measure a lamp’s height and circumference to compare in context with the intended space. We recommend the IKEA Ranarp as the best task lamp for reading or any activity where you need direct, overhead light.

Pelosi, McConnell, Schumer: What are House, Senate leaders' jobs?

who is the house majority leader

The House is staring down a deadline of Nov. 17, when current government funding expires. In his blueprint for the next few months, Johnson said a stopgap measure extending funding until January or April may be needed to approve more spending and avoid a shutdown. Leader's digital version of the official House calendar can be added to your personal calendar--whether it's in Outlook, Google Calendar, or many other platforms. It's the only digital calendar that will automatically update throughout the year when voting days are added or canceled. "These are fateful days for our great nation, and now is the time for us to speak and to lead with clarity and conviction. By God’s grace, and by standing together, we will succeed," Johnson said.

House, Senate leaders: Who are they, and what do they do?

Although it is possible in most cases to determine whether the legislation would affect direct spending or revenues, time may be insufficient to estimate the magnitude of those effects. If CBO has prepared estimates for similar or identical legislation, a more detailed assessment of budgetary effects, including effects on spending subject to appropriation, may be included. In Pennsylvania’s 12th District, which includes Pittsburgh and some of its suburbs, first-term progressive Rep. Summer Lee, is facing a primary challenge over her opposition to the Israel-Hamas war. Bhavini Patel, a more moderate Democratic congressional candidate has tried to closely align herself with President Joe Biden. Democrats have repeatedly countered that the measure would restrict low-income patients’ access to health care and accuse the GOP of pushing the issue to win favor among voters.

Floor Updates

McCarthy was eventually elected minority leader in 2018, after Democrats won the House. After a historically weak performance by the minority party in a midterm election, House Republicans have struggled to unite. Uncertainty hangs over the speakership election, as Kevin McCarthy attempts to quell a conservative revolt that could derail his long-held hopes of claiming the speaker’s gavel. While Xiong will complete the remainder of her predecessor's term, if she seeks reelection this fall to serve a full two-year term in the state House, she will have to run in a new district after a court-ordered redraw of legislative districts in metro Detroit. Nebraska Democrats vehemently fought back against this electoral change before the legislative session ended earlier this month and the measure didn't advance.

Republican Leadership

No further punishment is permitted during the impeachment proceedings; however, the party may face criminal penalties in a normal court of law. His ascent to Democratic leader was long planned and came with the explicit backing of his predecessor. Now, as the new fresh face of House Democrats, Jeffries has vowed to bring his fractious caucus together with the goal of clawing back control of the chamber in two years. In remarks after his election, he said he hoped to work with Republicans, but would not remain silent if they continued to embrace extremism. He was considered next in line for the speakership in 2015, but his bid imploded.

While the speaker is the clear leader in the House, the leadership structure of the Senate is a bit more nuanced. If they do, the bill does not become law unless each House, by a two-thirds vote, votes to override the veto. The approval of the Senate and the House of Representatives is required for a bill to become law. Both Houses must pass the same version of the bill; if there are differences, they may be resolved by a conference committee, which includes members of both bodies. The largest committee of the House is the Committee of the Whole, which, as its name suggests, consists of all members of the House. The Committee meets in the House chamber; it may consider and amend bills, but may not grant them final passage.

The assistant majority leader and assistant minority leader of the House, commonly called whips, are the second-ranking members of each party's leadership. The main function of the majority and minority whips is to gather votes of their respective parties on major issues. Before his election to Congress, Scalise served four months in the Louisiana State Senate and three terms in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He was the chair of the House Republican Study Committee from 2013 to 2014.[4] On June 19, 2014, Scalise's Republican colleagues elected him majority whip of the United States House of Representatives.

h Congress Leadership

House Minority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, right, talks to reporters, Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022, on Capitol Hill in Washington. One younger House Democrat, Rep. Nanette Barragán, D-Calif., who was elected in 2016, told NPR she was excited about the major shift in who will lead her party in the House. Barragán pointed out that she and Jeffries come from similar backgrounds, with working-class parents. The House Democratic Caucus has elected Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., to lead their caucus. 9Temporarily stepped aside as Majority Leader on September 28, 2005, pursuant to Republican Conference rules.

He served as House Majority Leader between 2007 and 2011 and again between 2019 and 2023. Additionally, Congressman Hoyer served as House Democratic Whip first from 2003 to 2007 and later from 2013 to 2019. Prior to serving as Whip, Congressman Hoyer was the Chair of the Democratic Caucus – the fourth-ranking position among House Democrats – from 1989 to 1995. He is also a former Co-Chair of the Democratic Steering Committee and served as the chief candidate recruiter for House Democrats from 1995 to 2000. As House minority leader, Jeffries will become the first Black person to lead a major political party in Congress. He is among a new slate of leaders elected Wednesday to lead House Democrats in the next session of Congress, including Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Mass., as Jeffries' No. 2, and Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., as the third-ranking leader.

He narrowly lost a bid to become governor of Minnesota in one of the closest elections in state history. Four years later, he was first elected to Congress, winning the seat vacated by the conservative firebrand Michele Bachmann. Just two years later, Emmer, in the same role, faced blowback after Republicans only narrowly won the House, making far fewer gains than anticipated. In the wake of the disappointing results, he faced stiff competition in his bid to become the majority whip though he ultimately prevailed on the second ballot.

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives announces bills that will be considered under suspension of the rules in that chamber. Under suspension, floor debate is limited, all floor amendments are prohibited, points of order against the bill are waived, and final passage requires a two-thirds majority vote. Candidates across these races are running on some of the biggest issues facing the country — from abortion to the war in Gaza to election integrity. And the candidates whom Democratic and Republican voters pick on Tuesday could give larger insights about their views on topics that appear central to this fall's general election. All 17 members of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation are running for re-election in 2024 and three of those incumbents are facing serious primary challengers.

The rules were changed in 1975 to permit party caucuses to elect chairs, shifting power upward to the party leaders. In 1995, Republicans under Newt Gingrich set a limit of three two-year terms for committee chairs. The chairman's powers are extensive; he controls the committee/subcommittee agenda, and may prevent the committee from dealing with a bill. The rules of the House generally address a two-party system, with a majority party in government, and a minority party in opposition. The presiding officer is the Speaker of the House, who is elected by the members thereof. Other floor leaders are chosen by the Democratic Caucus or the Republican Conference, depending on whichever party has more voting members.

The House of Representatives says the term comes from Great Britain in the 18th century. In the instance when the presidency and both Houses of Congress are controlled by one party, the speaker normally takes a low profile and defers to the president. For that situation the House minority leader can play the role of a de facto "leader of the opposition", often more so than the Senate minority leader, due to the more partisan nature of the House and the greater role of leadership. The states of Washington and California use a similar (though not identical) system to that used by Louisiana. The floor leaders and whips of each party are elected by their respective parties in a closed-door caucus by secret ballot.[3] The Speaker-presumptive is assumed to be the incoming Speaker, although not formally selected to be nominated for Speaker by the majority party's caucus. After this period, the Speaker-designate is also chosen in a closed-door session by the largest caucus although the Speaker is formally elevated to the position by a public vote of the entire House when Congress reconvenes.

Since Snell's description, other responsibilities have been added to the job. Before examining the institutional and party assignments of the minority leader, it is worth highlighting the historical origin of this position. Herzberg said he's excited to start moving Democratic priorities once he's sworn in as a state lawmaker.

In 2007, when Jindal was elected to the governorship of Louisiana, Scalise announced his intentions to seek the House seat again. However, the Constitution states, "All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives." Because of the Origination Clause, the Senate cannot initiate bills imposing taxes. This provision barring the Senate from introducing revenue bills is based on the practice of the British Parliament, in which only the House of Commons may originate such measures. Furthermore, congressional tradition holds that the House of Representatives originates appropriation bills. The House began work on April 1, 1789, when it achieved a quorum for the first time. The Brooklyn-born son of public sector workers, Jeffries speaks with pride about growing up in a working-class outer-borough neighborhood.

He was the first candidate since McCarthy's ouster to face no opposition from his own party. He noted that Democrats provided support for legislation to raise the debt ceiling, avoid a government shutdown and provide disaster relief funding. "From the very beginning of this Congress, House Democrats have made clear that we will find bipartisan common ground with our Republican colleagues wherever and whenever possible for the good of the American people, and House Democrats have repeatedly done just that," Jeffries said. "We're going to dispense with all the usual ceremonies and celebrations that traditionally follow a new speakership because we have no time for either one," Johnson said. "The American people's business is too urgent in this moment. The hour is late. The crisis is great."

In 1919, for instance, Republicans bypassed James R. Mann, R-IL, who had been minority leader for eight years, and elected Frederick Gillett, R-MA, to be Speaker. A look at one minority leadership strategy—partisan opposition—may suggest why it might be employed in specific circumstances. The purposes of obstruction are several, such as frustrating the majority party's ability to govern or attracting press and media attention to the alleged ineffectiveness of the majority party. "We know how to delay," remarked Minority Leader Gephardt.[40] Dilatory motions to adjourn, appeals of the presiding officer's ruling, or numerous requests for roll call votes are standard time-consuming parliamentary tactics.

Live updates: Rep Mike Johnson of Louisiana elected speaker of the House

who is the new house speaker

Shortly after 1 p.m., the House began voting for speaker, with Johnson as the Republican nominee and Jeffries as the Democratic nominee. He was the first candidate since McCarthy's ouster to face no opposition from his own party. Asked if he was worried Johnson might attempt to overturn the results of the 2024 election, Mr. Biden said he wasn't. Johnson returned to the House to applause from those in the chamber, and McHenry called the House back into order. The first order of business for the House under the new speaker is to consider a resolution from Texas Rep. Mike McCaul "standing with Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas and other terrorists."

More from CBS News

A single hearing has been held as part of the impeachment effort, by the House Oversight Committee in late September. During the proceeding, law professor Jonathan Turley, who was a witness for the GOP majority, said he did "not believe that the current evidence would support articles of impeachment." Johnson said lawmakers "have a duty to the American people to explain this to them so they understand it well, and we are going to establish a bipartisan debt commission to begin working on this crisis immediately." "We're in overtime right now, right? So you don't blame the backup quarterback for the failures of the guy that just came out of the game," Perry told reporters. "Even though we have real disagreements about important issues, there should be mutual effort to find common ground wherever we can," the president said.

But Johnson's ability to avoid Trump's ire cleared a hurdle for him within the House GOP, which is attuned to the wishes of the "MAGA" base. In the Trump presidency, Johnson argued that then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi's move to rip up a copy of his State of the Union speech was a crime. “A lot of people have been talking about this the last 48 hours, and I did a little legal memo to point out to my colleagues that she actually committed a felony,” Johnson said on Fox News at the time. Johnson is a constitutional lawyer who has used his talents to craft some creative — and controversial — theories. The most notable is his role in devising an argument aimed at keeping Donald Trump in power even though he lost the 2020 election. Emmer began to lose support from conservative lawmakers shortly after Trump's missive, and he bowed out of the contest shortly after.

Determining the next steps in the Biden impeachment inquiry

As Johnson made his way from his House office to the floor, he told CBS News that he "feels very good" about the vote and believes he can secure the necessary 217 votes on the first round. If all 221 Republicans and 212 Democrats mark themselves present, Johnson will need 217 votes to win the gavel. Two seats are vacant due to the resignations of Reps. Chris Stewart, a Republican from Utah, and David Cicilline, a Democrat from Rhode Island. Stefanik praised Johnson as a "man of deep faith" who is a "titan" on the Judiciary Committee and "dedicated member" of the Armed Services Committee.

"Today is the day that House Republicans will humbly look in our hearts and elect Mike Johnson as speaker of the People's House," she said. The California Democrat noted Johnson's role in the effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Rep. Pete Aguilar of California, chairman of the Democratic caucus, rose to nominate Jeffries for speaker and accused Republicans of manufacturing a crisis that has lasted 22 days.

House expected to vote on resolution in support of Israel Wednesday afternoon

"We're going to dispense with all the usual ceremonies and celebrations that traditionally follow a new speakership because we have no time for either one," Johnson said. “The door to the speaker’s office now is open to the members and to the constituents, not just the lobbyists,” Rep. Matt Rosendale told reporters. House conservatives are signaling they’ll give the newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson some runway and flexibility as the House barrels toward a November 17 spending deadline to fund the government. GOP Rep. Stephanie Bice of Oklahoma is considering a run for conference vice chair – the leadership role previously occupied by now-Speaker Mike Johnson, according to her spokesperson. Republicans could continue with their inquiry and ultimately decide not to bring articles of impeachment against the president. "But I also do believe that the House has passed the threshold for an impeachment inquiry into the conduct of President Biden."

He noted that Democrats provided support for legislation to raise the debt ceiling, avoid a government shutdown and provide disaster relief funding. "We'll be talking about how that's going to be done here in the coming days and it's a top priority." "We're going to dispense with all the usual ceremonies and celebrations that traditionally follow a new speakership because we have no time for either one," Johnson said after the vote. "The American people's business is too urgent in this moment. The hour is late. The crisis is great." Former Georgia Rep. Doug Collins, the top Republican on the Judiciary panel during Trump’s first impeachment, said Wednesday that during hectic times on the committee, Johnson would calmly try to organize a way forward.

Johnson has also co-sponsored legislation by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., called the Protect Children’s Innocence Act, which would make it a crime to provide gender-affirming care to people under 18 years of age. A spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ rights group, labeled Johnson “Jim Jordan with a jacket and a smile,” referring to the right-wing firebrand from Ohio who chairs the House Judiciary Committee. Johnson has a spotless history of voting against legal abortion, earning an "A+" rating from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

McCarthy announced in September that he would be opening a formal impeachment inquiry into Mr. Biden focused on allegations that he benefited financially from his family members' foreign business dealings. Republicans have presented no direct evidence of wrongdoing by the president since they began looking into the Biden family's overseas work after taking control of the House in January. In his proposed schedule for the current Congress, Johnson said passing the final version of the NDAA would take place in December. In his blueprint for the rest of the 118th Congress, Johnson proposed the House take up the farm bill in December and begin negotiations with the Senate "as soon as possible" following action by the upper chamber. Congress passes a package of legislation that sets policy for agricultural and food programs, known as the farm bill, every five years. The most recent package was approved in 2018 and expired Sept. 30, though some of its provisions remain in place, according to the Department of Agriculture.

GOP Rep. Scott Perry, a conservative member from Pennsylvania, said Tuesday that members will likely give Johnson some leeway on government spending bills. A member of Congress since 2017, Johnson has no experience in the House leadership, but vowed to hit the ground running and get the House back to work. A government shutdown is fast approaching, and the White House has requested a $106 billion emergency aid package for Israel, Ukraine and other priorities.

"On behalf of the House Republican conference, I rise today to nominate the gentleman from Louisiana, Mike Johnson, as speaker of the people's house," Stefanik said, which followed loud applause. Chalian noted that the last Republican candidate to win the speaker's gavel on the first vote was Paul Ryan in 2017. The GOP party also cheered on Rep. Jim Jordan, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Majority Whip Tom Emmer — all who had launched bids for the speakership — after they voted for Johnson. Rep. Mike Johnson, a key figure in failed efforts to overturn the 2020 election, seems to have enough votes to secure the gavel after weeks of GOP infighting left the House in chaos.

Two other previous candidates, Reps. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan, withdrew their names from consideration earlier in the process after failing to unite the party's various factions. The House is expected to vote on a resolution in support of Israel on Wednesday afternoon, according to a notice from the House Democratic whip. The members who ousted McCarthy also told reporters that they have no regrets now about ousting McCarthy.

Colleagues say the deeply religious Louisiana Republican who calls himself a “servant” will be a steady hand and give them a fresh start. Many hope they will finally be able to move past the seemingly intractable divisions within their conference that have felled every House GOP leader in the past decade. Rep. Don Bacon is seated next to New York GOP members Nick LaLota and Anthony D’Esposito, as he did for the previous votes. "Hakeem Jeffries has not turned his back on the will of the American people. The son of two social workers, he's always stood by the side of working families. The most pressing needs of everyday Americans are his north star." This is the first round of voting with Rep. Mike Johnson as the Republican speaker nominee.

Johnson received an "F" grade from Republicans for Ukraine on its GOP Congressional Report Card. Turning to Jeffries, Aguilar said the Democratic leader has "never turned his back on the will of the American people." Before the vote in the House, Johnson said he had not spoken to the president, but said he assumed he would soon. Jeffries closed his remarks declaring, "Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election. He's doing a great job under difficult circumstances and no amount of election denialism will ever change that reality. Not now. Not ever." The Democratic leader also vowed that his party will continue to support Ukraine to defeat Russia's aggression. "Our commitment to Israel's security is ironclad and Israel has a right to defend itself under the international rules of war against the brutal terror unleashed on its citizens by Hamas," Jeffries said.

CNN Political Director David Chalian notes that as the House approached the halfway mark of the floor vote, Republican Mike Johnson has lost zero votes from members of his party. When speaker elections have gone to multiple ballots, no speaker has ever been elected on ballots four to eight. During the speaker battle, Trump proved more adept at hurting candidates than helping them win — his early endorsee, Jordan, flamed out on the floor.
